I can't install my Hallmark Card Studio

When I put the DVD in the green screen comes up with install on it, when I press INSTALL all I get is "This installation package could not be opened. Contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows Installer package"

Why?

When I put the disc in the DVD slot the disc tries to open when I press install but all I get is a notice as follows:- This installation package could not be opened. Contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows Installer Package.

I have been in touch with Technical support at Avanquest and done everything they suggested (disc clean up etc) but I STILL get the above message.

When I try to open it manually all the files seem to be there but it just will not open

Would be glad of any suggestions

I have just seen a blog from Mary Holt on this site (5/12//10) and she had the same problem and had to install Microsoft NET.Framework 4 to get the Hallmark installer to run. How do I do that? and will it work for me? I seem to have been sent the 2010 version and not 2011 does this make any difference?

Beryl,

I never received a clear answer to the question on which program this is in reference to.  You make a mention of Hallmark when discussing someone else's post.  Does this mean that you have Hallmark Card Studio?

Beryl,

Thank you for confirming that it is the Hallmark Card Studio software.  Now, which version of Hallmark Card Studio Deluxe are you attempting to install?  Which is the one that came in the box that you originally purchased?

Beryl,

Hallmark Card Studio 2010 does not require .NET Framework to install.  However, it does require .NET Framework in order to run Hallmark after it has been installed.  If you do not already have it installed on your computer, Hallmark Card Studio will install it for you after it finishes installing itself.

The problem you are experiencing is with the installation itself.  I am not sure why Mary Holt needed to install .NET Framework 4.0 to install the program, except that she was installing it on a virtual machine.  I cannot think of why that may make a difference, but that is a different environment than a regular computer.  So, it may have some unusual requirements to install Hallmark Card Studio 2010.

The error message you are getting typically indicates a problem reading one of the installation files on the disc.  My assumption is that the Technical Support asked you to try cleaning the disc to see if that corrects the problem.  If they have not done that, please try cleaning the disc with a lint free cloth and water.

If the issue persists after cleaning the disc, then it is likely the problem is something defective with the disc itself.  There may be an imperfection in the disc media that is causing a problem reading one of the installation files.  In that case, what I would recommend is that you contact Technical Support once again and request a replacement disc.

Dear Robbie,

Thank you for all your help.

Avanquest have actually sent me a replacement disc which still comes up with the same message. My friend has tried it on her windows 7 and it installs OK on that.

Avanquest also say it is the 2011  version although it says 2010 on the box does this make any difference?

When I put the DVD in the computer I can only get as far as the Green installation window and as soon as I press install that is when I get the message "This installation package could not be opened, contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows Installer package." I don't know how I can do that.

So therefore hallmark studio cannot install NET. framework because I can't get that far.

Why will it install on windows 7 and not on XP? It says clearly on the box it is compatible with XP, 7 and Vista

Beryl,

It sounds like you were sent the newer version of Hallmark Card Studio with the replacement disc.

Either version of the program can be installed on Windows XP.  I currently have both versions installed on my Windows XP computer.

The problem you are experiencing is not related to the program.  There is something on your system that is causing the problem.  I thought the issue may have simply been a bad disc.  However, if that was the case, you would not have been able to install it on any computer.  Since you were able to install it on your friend's computer, this eliminates the issue as being a problem with the disc itself.

What I was trying to explain was that Mary Holt's solution should have nothing to do with the problem you are experiencing.  You should be able to install any version of Hallmark Card Studio on a computer that has never had .NET Framework installed on it.  It does not require .NET to install Hallmark, but Hallmark needs .NET to run after it has been installed.  Or, to put it another way, you need gas to drive a car, but you can still have a car without gas.  It may not run after being installed, but you can still install Hallmark Card Studio without .NET.

What I would suggest you try next is to try copying the files from the DVD to some place on your computer.  There is a chance that the issue may be with the drive that is reading the disc.  All you would want to do is create a folder somewhere, such as your Desktop.  Then, drag/drop the contents of the Hallmark disc into that folder.  If it copies everything from the disc with no problems, then it is not likely a problem with the drive, either.

Hi Robby,

I am very grateful for your help.

I have tried to do the latest thing you have suggested.

I created a folder on my desk top then I tried dragging and dropping The Hallmark Studio folder, Adobe acrobat document and Hallmark folder

I got so far with the Hallmark Folder and then it stopped and said it cannot copy Data 11

Data error (Cyclic redundancy check) whatever that may mean.

It copied 1.99 GB of Hallmark Folder of 3.79 GB then stopped.

So have you any more ideas? Thank you.

Beryl,

A CRC error indicates a problem copying files.  Basically, while it is copying the files it does a check to make sure that what is copied matches the original source.  You system is finding a problem when comparing the copied files to the originals.

Normally, this indicates one of two things.  Either there is a problem with the disc or there is a problem with the drive reading the disc.  If this is the same disc that you friend was able to use to install the program, this seems to point to there being an issue with the drive reading the disc.  Do you happen to have another DVD drive in the computer?  If so, can you try installing the program from that second DVD drive?

Now, if this is not the same disc that your friend installed from, can you perform the same test using that disc instead?

Hi Robby

I have only 1 DVD drive, the other is a CD - RW Drive.

The Disc is the same one as my friend used so it is not the disc.

What do I do now?

Is there any way I can download the drive that reads the disc?

Robby E. says:

Beryl,

The issue sounds like a physical problem with the drive.  There is nothing that I am aware of that will correct the issue other than possibly repairing/replacing the drive.  However, I am not an expert when it comes to hardware.  So, I would not recommend you immediately run out and do either of the above.  What you may want to try to do is check other program discs in the drive.  It may be that something is just slightly out of alignment and causing the read problem with the drive.  You may find that other discs work fine.  If you see a consistent problem with multiple discs, then you may want to investigate repairing/replacing the drive.

In regards to your issue with your Hallmark disc, the best I can suggest is that you submit a ticket to Technical Support.  They may be able to provide you a download copy of the program by confirming your purchase of the boxed copy of the program.
